7/2/2023 0 Comments Heart in Hand by salifiable![]() I mean, sharing my love for these fantastic free reads with you guys. Hi! Completely clueless ice hockey virgin here!Įver since I fell down that fanfiction rabbit hole, I enjoy preach. This may have been fan-fic/slash, but it is on my list of best books I have read this year. Wanted to see the fallout from the next day after the end of the book, wanted to see the guys together moving forward, but that's because I'm greedy. ![]() The plot-mover of this book is a misunderstanding, but in this context it is wholly believable and you'll only want to kick both guys a little bit. Sid in his tentative awakening and uncertainty is wonderful, but it is Alex, with his humor and silliness and great heart who will make you fall in love. The relationships of the guys with each other, their teammates and family and the wider world, are the centerpieces of this story. The hockey background is very well done - enough emphasis to be central to the story of two professional players but not too much. ![]() The characters are perfect, the plot is clean (although the initiating episode gave me a little pause.) The story becomes wonderfully angsty, believable and painful enough to put an ache in your chest. This story just displaced Tigers and Devils as my favorite sport-centered M/M book. ![]() 7/2/2023 0 Comments Extra yarn![]() ![]() The Magic Porridge Pot is what this reminds me of most, because the overflowing porridge changes the town as significantly as Annabelle changes the look of the town.īut in plot, this story is more like The Magic Paintbrush, a Chinese folktale which has been re-visioned by other contemporary picture book creators such as The Magical Life Of Mr Renny by Leo Timmers. ![]() Such tales are classified by Aarne-Thompson as 565. There is also the bottomless object found in many fairytales, for instance the porridge in The Magic Porridge Pot. This is a fairytale setting, with a village where everyone knows each other, the local crank, and where aristocrats from across the water can hear about you and pay you a personal visit. Although this is a contemporary story, it utilises fairytale tropes, in a mostly fairytale setting. Extra Yarn (2012) is a picture book written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen. ![]() 7/2/2023 0 Comments The life of olaudah equiano![]() ![]() ![]() He tells them that, if they look around the world and think of themselves as superior, they should recall a Bible passage stating that God made all nations of men “of one blood. Equiano’s famed account defies easy categorization, much like the man himself. Carretta succeeds at painting Equiano as an intelligent, introspective, and enterprising individual whose unique set of skills positioned him to advocate for not only himself, but a people. Equiano urges Europeans to remember that their ancestors were once as uncivilized as Africans, but that there’s no reason those ancestors should have been made slaves. Olaudah Equiano’s life exemplifies the truth of this phrase. Further oppressed by the burden of slavery, they are not treated as men. Once he climbed a tree to witness a battle and saw a great deal of fighting before his people won and took the enemy chief prisoner they later sentenced him to death and divided the spoils among the warriors. He argues that the “apparent inferiority” of Africans can much more persuasively be linked to their situation-since they are initially ignorant of Europeans’ customs and language-rather than to true difference. Equiano describes the guns and swords used in such battles. He hopes such an example might work against racism, since the minds of the Spaniards couldn’t have changed because of their complexions. Mitchell’s example of the Spaniards, who, since inhabiting the warmer parts of the Americas, have turned as dark as the native Indians. Equiano adds that he’ll leave the question of the different skin color between Eboan Africans and modern Jews to more learned men than himself. ![]() 7/1/2023 0 Comments Bloodrose andrea cremer![]() ![]() ![]() “Sexy and thrilling. 7/1/2023 0 Comments Book goodbye to berlin![]() ![]() That might have been stage triumph enough for any literary work. ![]() "Miss Harris was more essentially Sally Bowles than the Sally of my book," he said, "and much more like Sally than the real girl who long ago gave me the idea for my character." Four years later it was made into a film, again starring Harris, which was not a success. Isherwood himself was impressed by the actress. The title is taken from the opening line of the novel, which runs, "I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking." When it bowed on Broadway, it was one of Van Druten's biggest successes and helped make its Sally Bowles, Julie Harris, a star. He called it I Am a Camera and focused on the character of Sally, just one of many figures in Isherwood's stories. The novel was first adapted for the stage by British playwright John Van Druten. But the characters he created, including the English #cabaret singer Sally Bowles (the surname was borrowed from novelist Paul Bowles), have had a much more vibrant and public life on stage than they have on the page. ![]() Well, not the book itself, exactly, though "Goodbye to Berlin" remains in print and is certainly still read. Little did novelist Christopher Isherwood know when he published his 1939 novella "Goodbye to Berlin" - a semi-autobiographical account of his own time in Berlin in the 1930s - what an afterlife the book would have. ![]() |
